Along with the economic miracle of the last few decades in the PRC, the level self-confidence displayed in its political and military engagements has been rising accordingly. The PRC has been employing more proactive stance in international politics, however it has also begun to pursue more aggressive responses towards territorial disputes and conflicts.

Project CHINET and the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic, would like to invite you to its summer school, titled: “China and Its Neighbours: Threats and Opportunities.” This one-week intensive course will bring together scholars and students of Chinese Studies and other related fields, to learn about and discuss possible future developments in Asia with a focus on Chinese foreign policy, ethnic policies and regional security.

How to apply:

Please fill in the registration form and send your CV and Statement of purpose to: chinet.upol@remove-this.gmail.com no later than June 6th 2014. Your statement of purpose should be one page, typed, double spaced (max. 600 words). This should explain why the course will be important to you, how it will help you to fulfill your future goals or how it relates to your current studies or employment. Participants selected will be informed by June 13th 2014.

Evaluation methods:

Each student will be asked to give a presentation in front of the class (15-30 min) closely related to topics discussed during the course. Students may form groups of 3-4 people for this purpose but should take care to make each participant’s responsibility for his or her part of the presentation transparent. Successful participants will obtain certificate of participation.

Credits:

This summer school is accredited by the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts Palacký University Olomouc and students can receive four credits for successful participation. However, these credits are not ECTS Credits.  Students are usually able to obtain credits from their home institution and we will be happy to assist you in any way we can, however please be aware that the decision to award credits rests with your home institution.

Tuition fee:

Tuition for the whole week is free of charge. Participants will however need to cover all their personal costs, including transportation, accommodation, visa, trips etc.

Travel expenses and accommodation:

We are not able to cover your accommodation and travel expenses. However, we can assist you by providing a list of recommended accommodation in various price categories.

About Palacký University and Olomouc

SUMMER SCHOOL OF CHINESE LINGUISTICS, JUNE-JULY 2014

Palacký University Olomouc welcomes all students of Chinese language to participate in a one week international summer school.

Aims and objectives:

  • students are expected to have a basic knowledge of Chinese language and linguistics and to speak English on a level sufficient to communicate
  • all courses are taught in English so that they are accessible for students with all levels of Chinese
  • courses are designed to build up and reinforce a systematic knowledge of Chinese grammar as well as to extend students’ horizons through lectures on various research topics
  • a chance to exchange ideas and find inspiration for new research projects

Registration guidelines:

Application deadline: 1 June 2014

Please fill out the online application before June 1, 2014. Acceptance of your application will be confirmed by email before June 8, 2014. Invitation letters will be provided on request.
